From the organizers:

"For us, basketball helped forge lifelong friendships, build confidence and develop fundamental life skills such as communication and leadership. Playing helped entrench us in our community and gave us opportunities that led us to spread our wings. We have teamed up with The Red Door Family Shelter; an organization that assists families, refugees, and women fleeing violence by providing safe and supportive emergency shelter because we all, in one way or another, can relate to the families that it supports.  We’ve either lived through similar situations or are close to families that have.  We were all raised by our single mothers and have seen firsthand the sacrifices they’ve made to give us a better life.  We’ve been on the receiving end of support from people who had no commitment or need to help but nevertheless invested time and money in us to shape who we’ve become – something that we’re extremely grateful for. Like many, we feel a compelling obligation to give back. As a way of showing our appreciation, we want to help others, the way we were helped. We created the Committee Summer Classic Basketball Tournament as our way of paying that investment forward to help children and families in need overcome some of the obstacles they’re facing.  All proceeds from the tournament will go towards supporting youth programs at Red Door to ensure children at the shelter are given the opportunity to develop skills and build relationships that will help lead to a brighter future! We hope to make our families and communities proud, and encourage you to help us in our endeavor!"

We held our inaugural tournament last July and raised $6,000 for the shelter. While a great success, we feel we have more to give and will be running it back this year with the goal of raising even more money.  Whether you are young, old, male, or female, we have a spot for you and hope to see you the court!
