4. Where does my money go?

Gifts to Empower direct your donations towards the highest priority needs of the families at the Red Door. Providing your email address allows us to reduce our costs, eliminate tax-receipting errors and ensure that you get your electronic tax receipt within 1-2 weeks.  Even though you provide your email address, you may chose to opt-out of receiving email newsletters and updates from the Red Door.

If you do not have an email address, please call 416-915-5671 ext. 232 and we will help you with your order, and arrange for you to receive your tax receipt by mail.

9. What does the Red Door Family Shelter do?

The Red Door has been on the front lines of providing emergency shelter and support services to women and their children fleeing domestic abuse, refugees and homeless families for over 30 years.  Every year we support over 350 families in the GTA.

In addition to providing emergency shelter the Red Door offers a number of critical support services to help families heal, and make the transition to independence. These services include:

  • Counseling support;
  • Legal and immigration assistance;
  • On-site medical assistance and referrals;
  • Extensive programming for children and youth;
  • Assistance to find housing;
  • Assistance in job skills and finding employment
  • Support in the transition from the shelter to their new homes.

Residents escape from abusive situations and street life, receive necessary counseling and health care, and re-establish a sense of stability and security. They learn about their rights and responsibilities and are given the resources and time needed in order to achieve their goals.

The Red Door helps to break the cycle of homelessness in three fundamental ways:

  1. Providing emergency housing at our two shelters
  2. Providing support services for shelter residents, and
  3. Helping shelter residents find housing and supporting them as they move back into the community so that their transition to their new life is both positive and permanent.
