Laura's Story | Red Door Family Shelter

Laura's Story

“I wanted to see my mother after not seeing her for a long time, so I planned to visit her for my birthday. When I told him, he became really upset with me. I had never seen him so angry. I was scared.”

Thank you for transforming life for Laura* and her children.

Terrified and exhausted, Laura escaped her partner and left home with her two children. She didn’t know she was pregnant. She didn’t know how to find a better future - but she knew to head to the Red Door.

And because of you, Laura is on a completely different path.

For years, Laura’s partner controlled every aspect of her life. The household funds were never for her to use: their pantry and fridge were almost always empty.

Worse, he kept her from seeing her friends and family, slowly isolating her from her social network.

The emotional, financial and verbal abuse finally came to a head when the abuse targeted Laura’s then 3-year-old daughter. She knew she had to escape.

Because of generous donors like you, Laura and her children found sanctuary at the Red Door – a place to call home and heal from the past.

“I arrived cold and lonely at the Red Door. But the staff gave me warmth from their words of encouragement and kindness. I almost forgot what that felt like."

Every day - for hundreds of families each year - your support makes a difference for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

This Mother’s Day honour moms like Laura who took the courageous and dangerous step to protect their children and themselves.

Often, they are completely alone.

“I lived through so much oppression for years, my shame overwhelmed me. I didn’t even have the courage to tell my mother what was happening to me. I felt sorry to let my family know about my sad life.”

Give the gift of sanctuary. Your special gift will encourage single moms to move forward this May for Mother’s Day. Donate and honour moms at the Red Door.

Laura gave birth to a beautiful healthy girl after moving into her new home. Her family’s journey turned towards hope and healing because of caring donors like you.

“We are flying free now. I have tears in my eyes, but the tears are no longer of sadness but tears of joy – joy and gratitude because I found my way to the Red Door."

Many more moms need your support. You made it possible for Laura and her family to find the Red Door. Today, you can shape the lives of women and their children fleeing domestic violence.

Thank you, not just from us, but from Laura and the next 10 women and the next 100 women who will knock on our Red Door.

Donate to our Spring Campaign this year and make a difference in the lives of moms in need.
