Water intrusion & deterioration
Recurring leaks, aging windows and building-envelope problems require repeated repair rather than a lasting solution.
For decades, Red Door’s Gender-Based Violence shelter has protected women and children escaping abuse. The people and programs are strong. The building has reached the end of its life. Now we have the opportunity to build the shelter survivors deserve.

Red Door’s team continues to provide compassionate, professional care inside a facility that was never designed for modern gender-based violence services. Repairs can address the next leak or mechanical failure. They cannot create the kind of environment survivors and children need for the future.
Recurring leaks, aging windows and building-envelope problems require repeated repair rather than a lasting solution.
Unreliable heating and drafty conditions make it harder to provide a consistently comfortable environment for families in crisis.
The existing building cannot provide the barrier-free circulation, accessible rooms and inclusive design expected of a modern shelter.
Cramped rooms and layout limitations restrict privacy, counselling, children’s programming and trauma-informed care.
The rebuild is not simply a newer version of the old building. It is a chance to design the entire environment around the realities of survivors, children and frontline staff.
Leaving violence can mean arriving at shelter frightened, exhausted and uncertain about what comes next. The new Red Door will be designed so the building itself communicates something important: you are safe here, your children are welcome here, and you can begin again here.
Private family accommodation gives survivors and children space to sleep, regroup and regain a sense of control.
Barrier-free circulation, accessible rooms and an elevator support residents with mobility and accessibility needs.
Purpose-built entrances, sightlines and secure spaces can strengthen safety while maintaining dignity and warmth.
Quieter areas, natural light and thoughtful separation help reduce stress and support recovery.
Dedicated child and youth spaces create opportunities for play, learning, routine and connection.
Purpose-built counselling, case-management and program areas make it easier to connect families with the supports they need.
Moving an entire GBV shelter off-site would create cost, disruption and risk. Red Door’s preferred approach is to construct the new building on the available portion of the property while the existing shelter continues to operate, then transition residents into the new facility.
Maintain continuity for residents and staff throughout construction.
Construct on Red Door-owned land, reducing relocation risk and preserving long-term control of the site.
Move residents and programs into the new shelter when it is complete and ready for occupancy.
Capital support does more than pay for bricks and walls. It helps create the places where a child can sleep safely, a survivor can speak privately with a counsellor, and a family can begin planning a life beyond violence.
Private, dignified accommodation where women and children can rest and regain stability.
Purpose-built areas for play, learning, homework, programming and everyday childhood.
Private spaces for trauma counselling, legal assistance, safety planning and case management.
Barrier-free design that welcomes residents with mobility and accessibility needs.

Red Door has served families, women and children in Toronto since 1982. The organization has already completed a major purpose-built family shelter project. That experience matters: Red Door understands how to plan, fund, build, transition and operate a modern shelter — and how to turn donor support into a lasting community asset.
Government and institutional funding can take this project a long way. Community support can help turn the building into a truly exceptional place for survivors and their children — warm, dignified, accessible and built for healing.
Support the rebuild with a one-time or multi-year commitment.
Corporate, foundation and community partners can help fund major project priorities.
Major gifts, naming opportunities and legacy support can be discussed privately with Red Door.
Repairs can address individual failures, but they cannot correct the building’s fundamental limitations in accessibility, privacy, circulation, room configuration and program space. Rebuilding allows Red Door to create a purpose-built GBV shelter rather than continuing to adapt a building that was never designed for this work.
Red Door already owns the property. Building on-site avoids the cost and uncertainty of acquiring another location and supports continuity of operations. The preferred plan allows the existing shelter to continue serving women and children while the new facility is built on another portion of the property.
Continuity of service is a core project objective. The construction strategy is designed to keep the existing shelter operating while the new building is constructed, followed by a planned transition into the completed facility.
The planned shelter is purpose-built for gender-based violence services, with private family accommodation, improved accessibility, secure and trauma-informed spaces, dedicated counselling and program areas, children’s spaces and better support for residents and staff.
Individuals, families, foundations, corporations and community groups can contribute through one-time gifts, multi-year pledges, major gifts and campaign partnerships. Final donation pathways and campaign contacts can be added when the campaign is publicly launched.
With your help, Red Door can replace an aging shelter with a purpose-built home for safety, healing and new beginnings.
