Volunteer

When you volunteer, you’re giving a truly amazing gift: your time. We are so grateful for the volunteers at Red Door Family Shelter who make so many things possible for our families in need. We simply couldn’t offer the level of service and support that we do without people like you.

Types of Volunteers

Flying Solo

As an individual volunteer, you could help with our children’s programs, homework club, food bank, donation room, workshops, special events and much more. You can be part of something incredibly rewarding while meeting new people and having fun.

Group and corporate volunteering

  • At the moment, we do not have any on-site volunteer opportunities available at our shelter, but there are still many meaningful ways to get involved and support our work. One impactful way to contribute is by hosting an in-kind donation drive at your office. To learn more about the types of donations we are currently accepting, please visit our Gifts in Kind – Red Door Shelter page. To further support your efforts, we can also send community ambassadors to meet with your team and help facilitate the drive.

Examples of in-kind drives include collecting:
  • Essential hygiene items
  • Non-perishable food items
  • New household items for our families

If you have any questions or would like to discuss ideas, feel free to reach out to us at volunteer@reddoorshelter.ca. Thank you for your interest in supporting our community.

Good to know

Some of our volunteer positions are open to families and students 15 years of age or older.

We normally need volunteers on weekdays and weekday evenings, but some special events need your support on weekends.

Ready to open that door?

To get started, simply complete an individual volunteer application form or a group volunteer application form.

When there’s an opening that matches your interests and availability, we’ll reach out to arrange an online information session. Please note that some volunteers must complete a vulnerable sector police check and additional orientation and training for their roles.

The Wishing Tree

Not sure what the children at Red Door Family Shelter would like this holiday season? We’ve got you covered with The Wishing Tree! 🎄

Avoid the four stages of gift-giving—“I think they’ll like this!” “I think they’ll like this?!” “Will they like this?” “I hope they like this.”—and remove all the guesswork.

Each child staying in our shelter has written their wish, and we’ve added these heartfelt notes to our Wishing Tree. By choosing a wish to grant, you’ll make holiday dreams come true while keeping your gift-giving stress-free. 🌟
